Harkness Center Tour 10/17

Hi everyone, On Tuesday 10/17/17 we have the following.

Ø  I just want to remind all of you of the school tour I have planned for all of the troop as well as your families and friends.

Ø  The tour this time is at, The Harkness Career and Technical Center. 99 Aero Dr. Cheektowaga.

Ø  The tour will begin at 6:30 pm. I have 7 instructors that have volunteered to be there to give you an introduction to their programs. The principals have volunteered to be there also to run the tour and ask questions.

Ø  Shops on the tour include, auto mechanics, electrical shop, aviation with the flight simulators, culinary, cosmetology and many others.

Ø  For those scouts taking the electrical MB, this is a must to attend. When you are in the electrical shop, you will be working with tools, splicing wires and wiring devices. Seeing how a wall is electrically roughed, inside electrical panels and fire alarm components.

Ø  The electrical instructor with be assisting.

Ø  This is a full uniform event. Let’s make a great impression, so I can have us all back on a larger field trip. That will include a tour of Prior Aviation. Which is right next door !!!

Ø  Plan for at least 2 hrs. We will start on time. You can arrive as early as 6:15. Jake and I will be there at 6.

Ø  Please park in the lot to the right of the school and walk to the main entrance. I will meet you all there.

Congratulations WE DID IT!!!   $29,005 in popcorn sales.

A new troop record.  Special thanks to Dan & Maureen Dahlke and all that helped with this sale.  A BIG THANKS to all of those who sold or bought popcorn.

Congratulations on a successful Can and Bottle drive.  You collected 11,832 cans and bottles and scouts who dropped off flyers and pick up cans/bottles received $70.40 into their scout accounts.  Special thanks to Lisa Abramo for coordinating.

2. Bring $10 and Permission Slips for the Patrol campout at 9 Mile Island next weekend Nov 11-13^th.  This weekend is much like the claim jumper campout where patrols camp in their own campsite and cook their own food except on this campout, they also plan their own menu and buy their own food.
3. Milsher Indoor Hockey is Friday Nov 18^th from 7-9pm.  Cost will be paid by the troop to celebrate the successful popcorn sale.  This is open to parents and siblings.

Three scouts are eligible to be SPL this year, Matt Sternin, Josh Korman and Ben Thurston.  Matt and Josh have agreed to be Co-SPLs.  Ben has declined due to other school commitments.  Matt turns 18 in February which will require a Co-SPL SPL to be elected.   This means that we will not have an election for SPL this year.

Five scouts went to White Buffalo this year (Wow!):  Jared Dywan, Connor Gilmartin, Paul Orrange, Cory Pietrzyk. Chris Reardon.  Should these scouts want to be ASPL this year, they will be split, two in the first half of the year, two in the second half of the year and one to step in for Matt Sternin as Co-SPL after Matt turns 18 in Feb.  These scouts are also eligible for Patrol Leader or for other troop leadership positions.

Parents, I need you to let your sons read this.  The SPLs and I need to know which leadership positions your son is interested in.   We need  a 1^st choice and 2^nd choice for each scout that is 1^st class or above.  You can let us know at the first meeting Sept 12th or email me if you cannot make the meeting.  Troop Leadership positions or Patrol Leader position is required for all rank advancement for Star rank and above.

Troop Leadership Positions

Each scout that is 1^st class or above must hold a troop leadership position to earn their next rank.  Below are the positions and their responsibilities.  Note, in T286, SPL and ASPL must have attended White Buffalo National Youth Leader Skills for Troops (NYLST) training.

Senior Patrol Leader

• Preside at all troop meetings, events, activities, and annual program planning conference.
• Chair the patrol leaders’ council.
• Appoint Scout leaders with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster.
• Assign duties and responsibilities to other Scout leaders.
• Work with the Scoutmaster in training Scout leaders.

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

• Be responsible for training and giving direct leadership to the following appointed Scout

leaders: historian, Order of the Arrow troop representative, scribe, librarian, instructor,

quartermaster, and chaplain aide.

• Help lead meetings and activities as called upon by the senior patrol leader.
• Guide the troop in the senior patrol leader’s absence.
• Perform tasks assigned by the senior patrol leader.
• Function as a member of the patrol leaders’ council.

Patrol Leader

• Plan and lead patrol meetings and activities.
• Keep patrol members informed.
• Assign each patrol member needed tasks and help them succeed.
• Represent the patrol at all patrol leaders’ council meetings and the annual program

planning conference.

• Prepare the patrol to take part in all troop activities.

Assistant Patrol Leader

• Help the patrol leader plan and lead patrol meetings and activities.
• Help the patrol leader keep patrol members informed.
• Help the patrol leader prepare the patrol to take part in all troop activities.
• Lead the patrol in the patrol leader’s absence.
• Represent the patrol at all patrol leaders’ council meetings in the patrol leader’s absence.

Troop Guide

• Introduce new Scouts to troop operations.
• Guide new Scouts through early Scouting activities.
• Help set and enforce the tone for good Scout behavior within the troop.
• Ensure older Scouts never harass or bully new Scouts.
• Help new Scouts earn the First Class rank in their first year.
• Coach the patrol leader of the new-Scout patrol on his duties.
• Teach basic Scout skills.

Den Chief

• Serve as the activities assistant at den meetings.
• Meet regularly with the den leader to review the den and pack meeting plans.
• If serving as a Webelos den chief; help prepare boys to join Boy Scouting.
• Project a positive image of Boy Scouting.
• Set a good example.
• Wear the Scout uniform correctly.

Historian

• Gather pictures and facts about past activities of the troop and post on the bulletin board
• Take care of troop trophies and keepsakes.

Order of the Arrow Troop Representative

• Serve as a communication link between the lodge or chapter and the troop.
• Encourage year-round and resident camping in the troop.
• Encourage older-Scout participation in high-adventure programs.
• Encourage Scouts to actively participate in community service projects.
• Encourage Arrowmen to assume leadership positions in the troop.
• Encourage Arrowmen in the troop to be active participants in lodge and/or chapter activities

and to seal their membership in the Order by becoming Brotherhood members.

Librarian

• Establish and maintain a troop library.
• Keep records on literature owned by the troop.
• Add new or replacement items as needed.
• Have literature available for borrowing at troop meetings.
• Maintain a system to check literature in and out.
• Follow up on late returns.

Quartermaster

• Keep records of patrol and troop equipment.
• Keep equipment in good repair.
• Keep equipment storage area neat and clean.
• Issue equipment and see that it is returned in good order.
• Suggest new or replacement items.
• Work with the troop committee member responsible for equipment.

Scribe

• Attend and keep a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings.
• Record attendance and campout payments of all troop members.
• Take minutes at the patrol leaders council.

Instructor

• Instruct Scouting skills as needed within the troop or patrols.
• Prepare well in advance for each teaching assignment.

Chaplain Aide

• Keep troop leaders apprised of religious holidays when planning activities.
• Assist the troop chaplain or religious coordinator in meeting the religious needs of troop

members while on activities.

• Encourage saying grace at meals while camping or on activities.
• Lead worship services on campouts.
• Tell troop members about the religious emblems program for their faith.

Webmaster

• Establish and maintain a safe and secure troop website.
• Ensure the troop website is a positive reflection of Scouting for the public.
• Manage the troop’s electronic communication tools.
• Work with the Scouts to provide up-to-date troop information.

Leave No Trace Trainer

• Have a thorough understanding of and commitment to Leave No Trace.
• Successfully complete the Leave No Trace Trainer training course.
• Help minimize the troop’s impact on the land by teaching Scouts the principles of

Leave No Trace.

• Help ensure that the troop follows Leave No Trace principles on outings.

Junior Assistant Scoutmaster

• Function as an assistant Scoutmaster
• Accomplish any duties assigned by the Scoutmaster.
• Must be an Eagle Scout or former SPL/ASPL
